A method is provided for selecting a pillow and mattress based upon an empirical measurement of an individual's pillow selection criteria, mattress selection criteria and sleep characteristics. In accordance with the method, an individual's position on a diagnostic mattress and a controller associated with the diagnostic mattress is operated to measure a pressure of the air mattress via a pressure sensor. The measured pressure of the individual positioned on the diagnostic mattress is correlated to a recommended support level. The individual's recommended support level is correlated to a support characteristic thereby allowing the individual to select a fixed support structure. A system incorporating the principles of the method is also disclosed.

A method and system is provided for diagnosing a subject's desired level of support and comfort. In accordance with the method, a diagnostic mattress with an adjustable support structure is provided. A subject is positioned on the diagnostic mattress. The adjustable support structure of the diagnostic mattress is adjusted in accordance with a desired level of support as determined by the subject positioned on the diagnostic mattress. The subject's desired support level is correlated to a support characteristic of a mattress with a fixed support structure thereby allowing the subject to select a mattress with a fixed support structure characteristic generally equal to the subject's desired support level as determined from the diagnostic mattress. System employing the method is also disclosed.

6,709,246 Inflation/Deflation Device Having Spring Biased Value

The invention is drawn to an apparatus for supplying fluid, such as air, under pressure to a fluid accommodating means such as an air mattress and automatically adjusting the fluid pressure. The apparatus has a coupling device which attaches the apparatus to the air mattress. A housing encloses a motor, an impeller, a two-way valve and a solenoid. The solenoid opens the two-way valve to allow inflation or deflation of the air mattress. The motor is reversible and the impeller is used to force fluid into or out of the mattress. A controller is used to inflate and deflate the mattress. The controller can be attached to the apparatus or it can be a remote control.

6,662,393 Composite Mattress

A composite mattress made of both high resilience foam and low resilience foam. The base is made of the low resilience foam. The sleep surface is made of the high resilience foam. Edge supports are provided to prevent bottoming out. The sleep surface covers the base and the edge supports.

6,550,086 Airbed Valve System

An airbed mattress includes a valve for controlling inflation of the mattress. The valve is normally biased to a closed position to prevent changes in the mattress' level of inflation. The valve may be opened by introduction of an air pump. The valve and air pump are designed to operate cooperatively by employment of an adaptor to facilitate the introduction of the air pump. The valve has an air passageway which contains an internal airflow control assembly. The control assembly operates to open the valve to passage of air upon introduction of the air pump and adaptor as well as effecting the closing of the valve when the air pump and adaptor are withdrawn. The valve also may have an extension adapted for a releasable connection with an air pump and adaptor for holding the valve open.

6,256,821 Mattress System

A mattress system includes a first section of foam material forming the head section of a mattress, a second section of foam material forming, the central section of the mattress, and a third section of foam material forming the foot section of the mattress. The second section of foam material has a load responsive characteristic different from the load responsive characteristic of the first and third sections. The central section may be replaced by an inflatable air chamber.

6,253,401 Air Mattress System

An air mattress system includes a plurality of inflatable air chambers operatively connected to form an air mattress, a reversible air pump operatively connected to the air chambers, and a manually operable control operatively connected to the air pump for controlling the operation of the air pump. The manually operable control has at least a first setting for operating the air pump in a first direction for inflating the air chambers and at least a second setting for operating the air pump in a second direction for deflating the air chambers. Preferably, at least one inflatable air chamber is disposed below the plurality of air chambers to form a foundation for the air mattress. A gauge is included for measuring the air pressure in at least one of the air chambers, the gauge having a display for displaying the measured air pressure to a user.

5,960,496 Mattress System

A mattress system includes a first section of foam material forming the head section of a mattress, a second section of foam material forming the central section of the mattress, and a third section of foam material forming the foot section of the mattress. The second section of foam material has a load responsive characteristic different from the load responsive characteristic of the first and third sections. The central section may be replaced by an inflatable air chamber.

 5,740,573 Air Bed with Circumferential Belt  

An air bed includes first and second air-tight enclosures disposed side by side in a first plane. Each of the first and second air-tight enclosures is independently inflatable and has substantially the same length and width, the first and second air-tight enclosures together having a first cross-sectional area in the first plane. An inflatable foundation is disposed below the first and second air-tight enclosures in a second plane substantially parallel to the first plane. The inflatable foundation has a cross-sectional area in the second plane at least as great as the first cross-sectional area. The inflatable foundation is independently inflatable with respect to the first and second air-tight enclosures. The first and second air-tight enclosures and the inflatable foundation are secured together by a circumferential belt, with the first and second air-tight enclosures fixed in place with respect to the inflatable foundation.

 5,617,596 Tube for a Waterbed  

A tube for a waterbed includes a generally cylindrical tube body having a top, a bottom, and a pair of side walls extending from the top to the bottom. The tube body defines a longitudinal axis of the tube. First and second tube ends in combination with the tube body form a watertight enclosure. A fill valve is provided through which the watertight enclosure may be at least partially filled with water. Metering walls are disposed in the watertight enclosure generally transverse to the longitudinal axis of the tube, each pair of metering walls defining a tube section therebetween. The metering walls extend across the tube body from one side to the other and are sealed to each side wall. The metering walls have a top portion that is spaced from the top of the tube body to permit the metered flow of water from one tube section to another. They may also have a bottom portion that is spaced from the bottom of the tube body. The ends of the metering walls are connected to the side walls of the tube body with soft seals, so that if the soft seals break water is not released from the watertight enclosure. The metering walls flex in the vicinity of their top openings to relieve pressure and stress on the components of the tube.

 5,594,964 Waterbed Mattress Cover and Method of Making Same  

A cover for a waterbed mattress includes a top layer suitably sized to cover the waterbed mattress and an inner backing layer of substantially the same overall outline as the top portion disposed so that the top layer lies over the backing layer. A bottom is spaced away from the top layer and the inner backing layer so as to provide a cavity for a water mattress, with the bottom disposed below the cavity and the inner backing layer being disposed above the cavity. The top layer is divided into at least three sections, each section extending substantially across the top layer. The first section is fixedly secured to the inner backing layer by stitches disposed in a first stitching pattern while the other two sections are fixedly secured to the inner backing layer by stitches disposed in a second stitching pattern. It is preferred that one of the stitching patterns be a continuous wave stitching pattern and that the other be a tack and jump stitching pattern. It is also preferred that the first section be disposed so as to support the lumbar section of a human user reclining thereon. The lumbar support section preferably extends somewhat higher above the mattress than the other two sections. In one embodiment, a variable density pad is disposed below the backing layer, with a more dense section of the pad disposed below the lumbar section of the top.

5,490,295 Water Mattress and Air Mattress Construction

A water mattress includes a closeable vinyl envelope for receiving water, the vinyl envelope having a top, a bottom, and a plurality of sides, the sides being disposed in opposing pairs. A plurality of double-walled members extend from the top to the bottom of the envelope inside the cavity. Each double-walled member has a top connecting web extending across the top thereof and two walls depending from the connecting web, the connecting web being secured to the top of the envelope. Each double-walled member is also secured to the bottom of the envelope and extends longitudinally substantially from one side of the envelope to the opposing side of the envelope. It is preferred that each double walled member wall include an intermediate elastic section so that each of the double walls may stretch to a limited extent when force is applied thereto by water in the mattress. A pneumatic mattress of similar construction is also disclosed.

5,479,663 Safety Liner and Cover Assembly for a Water Mattress

A safety liner and cover assembly for a water mattress disposed inside an external frame. The assembly includes a base composed of a sheet of flat vinyl material and a side wall extending circumferentially around the base to define a recess for receiving a water mattress. The side wall includes a layer of vinyl material sealed to the base such that the base and side wall form a watertight safety liner. The side wall also includes either a plurality of semi-rigid panels or a layer of fabric secured to the vinyl layer. The fabric layer is disposed exteriorly of the vinyl layer such that the fabric layer forms the external layer of the side wall. A top fabric panel is disposed above the recess and has a length and width comparable to the length and width of the base. A slide fastener is provided for removably securing the top fabric panel to the side wall around the perimeter of the side wall to enclose the recess defined by the side wall and the base.

5,226,186 Waterbed Mattress with Draining System

A waterbed mattress has a watertight envelope having a top, a bottom and sides. The envelope defines a cavity for water. First and second valves are disposed in the envelope to selectively allow fluid communication between the cavity and the exterior of the envelope. The second valve is spaced from the first valve. Pump structure is operatively connected to the first and second valves for selectively evacuating water from the cavity. The pump structure includes a venturi member which operates inside the envelope to evacuate water from the envelope.

5,222,262 Waterbed Mattress with Baffles

A waterbed mattress includes a watertight envelope having a top, a bottom, and sides, which envelope defines a cavity for water. Anti-wave material such as fiber or foam, or anti-wave structure such as hydraulic inserts, is disposed inside the watertight envelope. The anti-wave material or structure is secured to the top of the watertight envelope by a plurality of seals and is in fluid communication with the water cavity. The plurality of seals form a pattern which is visible from the exterior of the waterbed mattress. This gives the appearance of a quilted top to the mattress when fiber or foam is secured to the top of the envelope by the seals. In some embodiments, a lumbar support is included.

 5,115,526 Softside waterbed foundation and package  

A softside waterbed foundation includes a pneumatically inflatable base and a compressible collar extending around the periphery of the base. The collar extends upwardly from the base to define a cavity for a water mattress. The base includes anti-bowing structure for preventing the base from bowing upwardly in the center during and after inflation. Alternatively, the base is composed of compressible, resilient foam, as is the collar. In the alternative construction, there is a closed vinyl shell enclosing the collar and the base. The shell has a closable port therethrough so that air in the closed vinyl shell may be evacuated through the port to reduce the volume of the collar and base for shipping. Because of its unique construction, the foundation and a water mattress may be shipped in a box having a girth plus length of no greater than 130".

 5,107,557 Waterbed Mattress with Air Cushion  

A waterbed mattress includes a vinyl watertight water bladder covered by an inflatable air cushion. In one embodiment, the top of the bladder forms the bottom surface of the air cushion, although the bottom surface of the air cushion may also be a separate sheet of vinyl. In either event, the air cushion is composed of two layers of vinyl, sealed around the edges. These layers are also sealed together at a number of locations inside the periphery of the air cushion and the air cushion is partially inflated to give the top of the mattress a soft, pillowy appearance. The air cushion layers are optionally sealed together to form separate zones which may be inflated varying amounts. Although it is preferred that the zones be inflated with air, some of the zones can be filled with water instead. The seals in the air cushion define numerous paths for air to flow under the user. When inflated a sufficient amount, the air cushion provides an insulating layer between the bladder of the waterbed mattress and the user. In addition to the air cushion, the mattress may further include an inflatable air bladder, either inside the vinyl bladder of the waterbed mattress or between the air cushion and the vinyl bladder, to provide additional support in predetermined areas, such as the lumbar area. An inflation valve for the watertight bladder passes through the air cushion and the air cushion is completely sealed circumferentially about the inflation valve.

 5,077,847 Waterbed Mattress Corner and Method of Making same  

A waterbed mattress corners are reinforced by a multi-layered angle made of a plastic material which is permanently fixed to the mattress. the angle has a first leg and a second leg extending from the bottom of the mattress to the top thereof. The first and second legs are disposed generally at ninety degrees with respect to each other. The angle is constructed by securing together a plurality of similarly shaped layers of a plastic material to form the angle. To reinforce a corner of the waterbed mattress the angle is placed over the corner so that one leg of the angle extends along one side of the corner and the other leg extends along the other side of the corner. One leg of the angle is secured to its corresponding side of the corner and the other leg is secured to the other side of the corner.

5,072,469 Waterbed Mattress with Air Cushion

A waterbed mattress includes a vinyl watertight water bladder covered by an inflatable air cushion. The air cushion is composed of two layers of vinyl, sealed around the edges. The mattress further includes an inflable air bladder, between the air cushion and the vinyl bladder, to provide additional support in predetermined areas, such as the lumbar area.

4,934,006 Waterbed Wave Dampening Batt and Method

A wave dampening batt for use inside a waterbed mattress is made by intimately mixing a multiplicity of short, non-woven fibers of a first type and a multiplicity of short, non-woven thermal bonding fibers. Raising the temperature of the mixture of fibers above the melting point of the thermal bonding fibers yet below the melting point of the fibers of the first type and then lowering the temperature below that melting point causes the thermal bonding fibers to join the fibers of the first type together throughout the wave dampening batt. A waterbed mattress having a batt made in accordance with this method is also disclosed. The fibers of the first type may be solid or hollow with closed ends, the hollow fibers with closed ends providing buoyancy for the batt. The fibers of the first type may also be lobed or unlobed, the lobed fibers having improved resiliency so that the batt recovers more of its thickiness after compression than a batt made of unlobed fibers of comparable size and denier.

4,914,761 Reinforced Corner for Waterbed Mattress

An improved corner for a waterbed mattress includes a first layer of vinyl forming the corner with a seam disposed generally linearly along the corner. The seam is formed of two portions of the vinyl heat welded together along the seam. A second layer or patch of vinyl is welded to the first layer by a weld which encircles and is spaced from the seam in the first layer.

4,658,453 Wave-Retarding Waterbed Mattress

A wave-retarding waterbed mattress comprising an envelope of supple sheet material for containing a liquid hterein and a free floating wave motion retarding baffle within the hollow interior of the envelope. The baffle comprises a plurality of bouyant sheets and a generally horizontally extending layer of material. The layer is positioned on the bouyant sheets with portions of the layer downwardly depending between the buoyant sheets when the mattress is filled with liquid.
