When is the best time to buy a new mattress

Your mattress is the most used and most important piece of furniture in your home.  It is the only furniture purchase you will make that not only affects your quality of sleep, but subsequently your mood, energy levels and overall health. However, no one wants to pay more than they have to for a new mattress.  So, when is the best time to purchase a new mattress?

First of all, to answer that question you must keep in mind that if you are having problems with quality sleep and aches and pains due to your mattress, you should not hesitate to purchase a new one as soon as possible.  The longer you sleep on a mattress that is negatively affecting your sleep, the more health issues you are going to face.

Whereas new living room furniture is usually a want, a high quality supportive and comfortable mattress is a need.

You should buy a new mattress if your old is causing you pain

In the long run, lack of sleep can cause a myriad of health issues such as memory loss, weight gain, depression and premature aging. Even more serious concerns with long term sleep deprivation are high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Furthermore, the aches and pains you have are only going to increase the longer you sleep on a mattress that is not giving you the right support.  Therefore, you should never wait for a sale or holiday to purchase a new mattress if you are having serious sleep issues or aches and pains caused by your current bed. So, now let’s discuss those sales…

Beware of fake sales

No one wants to pay too much for a mattress, or anything else they purchase for that matter.  Because of this people are always looking for a sale price.  However, consumers must be aware of fake sales.  Oftentimes, department stores and bedding retailers run huge ads boasting of colossal sales, such as The Sale of the Century and Sales Event of the Year.

Ask yourself, is it really the Sale of the Century or the Sale of the Year? Is it really marked down 75%? If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Many times you can go into that same retailer weeks or months later and find that the mattress is still marked at the same price as it was the first time you stepped into the store.  Not much of a sale is it?  So, how do you know if you really are getting a sale price?

Look for a price guarantee

Some retailers offer a price guarantee so that you never miss out on a sale. Look for retailers that offer a price guarantee and read the fine print very carefully. Find a retailer that will guarantee their prices even after the sale.

So, when is the best time to purchase a new mattress?

Yes, there are certain times of the year that you can save money on a mattress.  But, keep in mind these sales are usually through the vendor- the company that actually makes the mattress- and not the individual retailer.  MAP- or minimum advertised pricing- has become popular in the bedding industry. This means that a retailer can not advertise or sell some brands, such as Tempur-Pedic® or Serta® iComfort below a certain price level. Just keep in mind that they can sell that product for more than the MAP.

Before purchasing do your research and make sure that they are offering it at the lowest possible price they are able to. If a bedding store is promoting a reduced price on a mattress made by a company such as Tempur-Pedic®, it is more than likely legitimate. So when do these mattress companies lower their prices?  Typically holidays such as President’s Day and Fourth of July, with Memorial Day and Labor Day having the biggest savings events when it comes to buying a new bed. Oftentimes, during these Holiday Sales you can save up to 20% on your mattress and huge savings on adjustable bases as well.

Also, purchase at a bedding store and not a large department store.  Typically the larger department stores can not compete with the mattress retailers when it comes to free delivery, free installation and interest free financing.

Other good times to purchase a mattress

We have established that major US national holidays are a great time of the year to save money on a mattress.  However, what if you can not wait for one of these holidays?  There are other times of the year that you can get a great deal on a mattress.  Look for Black Friday specials the weekend of Thanksgiving.  Many times retailers are offering huge discounts on mattresses this weekend.

Just keep in mind that a good quality mattress does not come cheap.  Oftentimes, these are promotional level mattresses. However, this would be a perfect time to purchase for a guest room.  Also, at year’s end and during the summer months mattress retailers are selling their floor models to make room for new models. If you don’t mind sleeping on a floor model mattress, you can often save up to 50%. This is a great way to save on a mattress. Most bedding stores always have at least a couple of floor models or discontinued models that they are willing to part with at a huge discount to make room for the current models. It is always recommended to ask about these year round to save money.

As you can see, there are times of the year, such as national holidays that you can save on a mattress. Furthermore, asking about floor models and discontinued models is always a great way to save big especially at the beginning of the year and summer months. While shopping, just keep in mind that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. A high quality, supportive mattress is a purchase that is worth investing in.  Prepare to avoid the fake sales and if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
